Best Metamask Alternatives for 2023

This comprehensive guide will provide you with the Best Metamask Alternative Wallets for 2023. Hopefully, one of these wallets will be suitable to replace or use alongside the popular Metamask software wallet.

Metamask announced they would collect personal information, including IP address and transaction data, so it may be the perfect time to look for an alternative crypto wallet.

So, let’s dive into this guide and help you choose a Metamask alternative that is easy to use and keeps your data private.

5 Best Metamask Alternatives for 2023

In this article, we will talk about the four best Metamask alternatives for your DeFi needs. For each crypto wallet mentioned in this article, we will educate you on their unique features, how many blockchains are supported on the wallet, and most importantly, what data points they collect from their users.

  1. Rabby Wallet – The most secure crypto software wallet
  2. XDeFi Wallet – Best for NFTs
  3. Brave Wallet – Best for privacy
  4. MathWallet – Best for multiple chains
  5. Talisman – Best for Polkadot

Without further ado, let’s get un-(Meta)masked!

1. Rabby Wallet

The first Metamask alternative is Rabby Wallet. With Metamask, you must switch between chains manually if you want to change from one decentralized application to another, and the great thing with Rabby is that this is not required!

The Rabby wallet detects the blockchain being used on your browser and automatically switches your wallet to that blockchain, making it more user-friendly.

Secondly, most beginner users blindly sign transactions on their crypto wallets without comprehending what it means. They have no idea of the reliability of the application they are using and the consequences of their signature.

With their pre-transaction risk scanning feature, Rabby.io ensures you remain secure from any rug pull websites or shady smart contracts. So, if the smart contract you are interacting with has already been hacked, you will be notified. You will also be able to view the estimated change in your account funds before you sign the transaction, ensuring that you do not get your wallet drained.

Rabby Wallet

Rabby Wallet Security:

Rabby does not offer any significant back-end services, so there is a near-zero risk of data compromise. Their source code is open and has been audited by an experienced security firm. Read all about Rabby’s security here!

What Blockchains Does Rabby Support?

Rabby Wallet supports up to 39 blockchains, with more blockchains coming soon. Check them below!

Rabby Wallet Privacy:

Rabby does not set any tracking parameters on your wallet or browser. According to their privacy policy, they do not collect your full IP address, keys, transactions, and personal information from your wallet. Since they do not collect information, your transactions remain private and safe from hackers and regulatory authorities.

Verdict: Should you use Rabby Wallet?

In terms of security, this is the best software wallet due to its pre-transaction risk scanning feature and low data collection policy. If you frequently switch between multiple chains, they offer a smooth multi-chain experience.

2. XDeFi

XDeFi.io is another great Metamask alternative backed by heavy hitters like CoinGecko and Delphi Digital. Used by 10,000+ users, XDEFI Wallet allows you to swap over 10,500 crypto assets across 16 blockchains. This wallet is handy for NFT traders as you can view your JPEG assets in a gallery view. You can view the name of the NFT by hovering over it and even dragging and hiding the NFTs according to your liking.

You can also use XDEFI for in-wallet crypto swaps and bridge your assets across multiple blockchains. Also, if you get stuck, XDEFI has a detailed Support Academy where you can get help!

XDeFi Wallet

XDeFi Wallet Security:

XDEFI is a non-custodial wallet; your blockchain assets will remain entirely in your control. Unlike Rabby, XDEFI does not have an open-source code.

What Blockchains Does XDeFi Support?

  • Bitcoin
  • Ethereum
  • Polygon
  • Avalanche
  • Fantom
  • Arbitrum
  • BSC
  • BNB Beacon Chain
  • THORchain
  • Solana

XDeFi Wallet Privacy:

Verdict: Should you use XDeFi Wallet?

If you are an NFT trader, this wallet presents an intuitive display in your wallet of all your NFT assets. You can swap and bridge your crypto assets directly from your wallet, which keeps them in your custody.

XDEFI is one of the few crypto wallets that support the Solana blockchain.

3. Brave Wallet

Brave Browser is one of the OGs of the cryptocurrency market, with more than 42 million users. The popular Brave Wallet is a non-custodial one-stop solution of Brave Browser for (almost) all your crypto needs. Allow me to explain!

With Brave Wallet, you can buy any cryptocurrency using fiat currency directly from their Ramp service on the Solana ecosystem. Secondly, using their Brave Swaps feature, you can quickly swap one crypto for another directly from your crypto wallet. No need to connect your wallet to a crypto exchange. Moreover, their price engine feature does all the heavy lifting of finding a suitable DeFi provider for your asset. Due to their integrations with CoinGecko, you can directly track market rankings and your portfolio performance from your wallet.

Brave WalletThe secure multi-chain crypto wallet.

Brave Wallet Privacy:

Despite being a browser, Brave will not store your browsing history unless you use the Brave Rewards or Brave Sync feature. Brave Browser will not store these details even when you visit a website where you want to use your location details.

What Blockchains does Brave Wallet Support?

Currently, Brave Wallet supports 100+ blockchains.

Brave Wallet Security:

When you download wallet extensions, you are susceptible to account spoofing, phishing, and other scams where you could lose your crypto assets. Since Brave Wallet is native to Brave Browser, it is more secure and reliable compared to extension wallets.  Moreover, Brave Wallet has an open-source code that can be used and improved by anyone on the Internet.

Verdict: Should you use Brave Wallet?

If you’re looking for a Metamask replacement, Brave Wallet is up there with the best in terms of privacy, placing particular emphasis on self-custody! They have created a full wallet solution for all your needs, most of which is done directly from your wallet.

With a clean and intuitive user interface, Brave Wallet is the best option on this list if you are willing to move to the Brave Browser since the wallet is not available for other browsers.

4. MathWallet

With over 2 million users and backed by multiple heavyweight venture firms, MathWallet offers token exchange and a dApp store across blockchains.

With the MathVault feature, you can stake your crypto and earn compounding returns directly from your wallet. You can earn a minimum of 8% APR in MATH tokens for depositing specific cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. For more details on their staking platform, visit MathVault.

Most importantly, you will find step-by-step beginner guides for most wallet actions on the MathWallet blog

You can access Math Wallet by downloading the browser extension, Android, or iOS application. However, there have been complaints about slow load time from users and feature glitches when using multiple blockchains.

Math Multichain Wallet for Web3

MathWallet Security:

With MathWallet, you can secure your crypto with mnemonic phrases, 2-factor authentication, and private keys. For extra protection, when you choose to stake with MathWallet, your crypto will be locked for 21 days and cannot be withdrawn before 28 days.

What Blockchains does MathWallet Support?

MathWallet supports over 100+ blockchains, including BTC, ETH, Kusama, Polkadot, Solana, Cosmos, Filecoin, BSC, and many more.

MathWallet Privacy:

They do not have a privacy policy/term of use page on their website, which can be a potential red flag. MathWallet does use its own Ethereum, which is extremely easy to set up with this ‘How to switch node in MathWallet’ guide.

Verdict: Should you use MathWallet?

MathWallet supports over 100 blockchains, so this could be a decent choice if you are a DeFi trader working on multiple chains. MathWallet is secure and lets you stake directly from the wallet, so you always remain in control of your assets.

The customer support and slow load time can be a reason for worry, especially for DeFi traders that are making time-sensitive trades.

5. Talisman

Talisman Wallet is a self-custodial crypto wallet founded in 2021 and is one of the best multi-chain web3 wallets to use inside the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystem and offers full support for Ethereum. Allowing users to create, own and manage their accounts and safely store, send and receive their crypto assets.

The Talisman wallet is available as a browser extension. Users can get set up in seconds, import any existing Ethereum or Polkadot wallet, or connect to their Ledger hardware wallet. For those who don’t already have a wallet or any crypto, there’s a FIAT onramp, meaning you can buy assets with a credit card, Apple or Google Play.

With Talisman, you can also access the Talisman Portal to view your NFTs in detail, participate in 1-click DOT staking, explore their app directory, contribute to crowd loans and view your multi-chain transaction history.

Talisman Crypto Wallet

Talisman Security:

To make it easier for its users, Talisman gives a simplified brief of the transaction you are signing, which mitigates the risk of draining your wallet. The software also has a phishing protection feature, which will detect known malicious applications before you connect to them.

When you use Talisman, they will store your password in the extension’s memory. This is done so you don’t have to re-enter the password each time you want to sign a transaction or create a new account. To protect your password, Talisman has introduced an auto-lock feature for storing your password. This makes it extremely difficult for hackers to hack into your browser’s memory and retrieve private information.

What Blockchains Does Talisman Support?

Talisman supports 110 asset types on 150+ networks in the Ethereum and Polkadot ecosystems. These networks include all Polkadot Parachains, for example, Acala, Astar and Parallel Finance, and all layer 2 chains on Ethereum.

Talisman Privacy:

Talismans say they never record sensitive or identifying information, addresses or asset balances. They use Onfinality and Ankr as RPCs for the Ethereum mainnet, cycling between both when one becomes unavailable. Both providers value user privacy and do not collect any personally identifiable information. For more information, you can check out their privacy policy here.

Verdict: Should you use Talisman Wallet?

With one-click DOT staking, phishing protection, an NFT gallery and an aggregated Portal, Talisman is a perfect option for Ethereum and Polkadot DeFi users. Talisman is worth considering if you want to switch from Metamask due to privacy concerns!

Metamask Alternative Wallets to Consider in 2023

What is Wrong with Metamask?

On Nov 23rd, 2022, ConsenSys, Ethereum’s sister company and creator of the uber-famous OG crypto wallet Metamask, updated their privacy policy. According to the update, Metamask will begin to collect users’ transaction data, for example, the IP address of the browser you are using and your wallet address.

When word got out, the crypto Twitter community went ballistic.

Twitter Metamask Metamask will begin to collect users’ transaction data & IP address

As mentioned in the tweet above, this step by Metamask is problematic for two reasons:

  1. Since this data will be stored on one of the Ethereum servers, it can be hacked by malicious actors. Once your IP address and wallet address are compromised by malicious actors, they can easily break into your Metamask and run away with all your funds.
  2. Secondly, if this data is shared with regulatory authorities, which is mentioned in their Privacy Policy, ConsenSys and the regulatory authorities can easily figure out how much crypto you have in your wallet address and what transactions you are doing. With this information, ConsenSys (or regulatory authorities) will know how much money you make in crypto.

Crypto Wallets FAQs

What is better than Metamask?

Metamask is known for ease of use, security, and simplicity. If you are looking for these features, Rabby and Brave Wallet are great alternatives for Metamask. They are easy for beginner traders, have state-of-the-art security features and can connect to many blockchains.

Most importantly, your transaction details will remain fully private with Brave Wallet and Rabby.

Who owns Metamask?

As mentioned, Metamask is owned by ConsenSys – an Ethereum-based organization that creates software and blockchain solutions. Ethereum does not directly own Metamask, but you can be sure that its policies will influence the Metamask wallet in the future.

Is Metamask wallet the best?

Before this announcement, Metamask was one of the most popular crypto wallets. After the ConsenSys update in the privacy policy, we have seen a shift in conversation on social media to Metamask alternatives like XDEFI.

Metamask will continue to be used by the majority of crypto users, but users will now explore other crypto wallets.

What features to look for in a software crypto wallet?

When choosing a crypto wallet, you should look at security and privacy. If the wallet cannot secure your crypto, it is not worthy of being called a crypto wallet. As for privacy, your crypto wallet should never share your financial information with marketing companies or regulatory authorities.

Other features to consider when picking a crypto software wallet are ease of use if you are a beginner and the number of blockchains supported if you dabble in DeFi ecosystems on different networks.

Conclusion

The foundation of Web3 is privacy and decentralization, and if crypto wallets start collecting data, there won’t be much difference between Web2 companies like Facebook and Web3 companies.

If you want to continue to use Metamask, although we recommend you don’t, you should shift your RPC from Infura. Here is a detailed beginner’s guide from DeFi Llama on how to change Ethereum’s RPC.

We are sure we have missed some of your favourite Metamask wallet alternatives, so please let us know in the comments below your favourite wallet, and we can look to add it to this list in the future.
